But I'd like to know what might be going on. I could back up the contents of the exFAT drive and reformat it to see if that would solve the problem.

The interesting thing is I haven't encountered any error with the exFAT hard drive, and my Windows 10 machine's disk error checking shows no problem with the exFAT drive. Those dates are correctly listed for my external SSD and another external rotating drive used for Time Machine. 31, 1969 and the modified date is (what the heck?). A really weird thing is that the created date is Dec. I use this exFAT drive as a file backup drive for my Mac and PC.

"Get info" shows the correct volume name (i.e., Mac & PC) of the exFAT drive but shows "Unknown" as the volume type. Restoring the original state found as mounted.Īn internal error has occurred. However, FirstAid failed on the external exFAT rotating hard drive and gave me the following lines. No issue was found on the external APFS SSD as expected. I hope you find a happy ending too.I just wanted to check my two external drives (one SSD the other rotating) using FirstAid of my M1 Mini running Big Sur. In any case, when the new 2T drive comes, I’ll try moving the old backup data to it and shelve this one. Looks like my fridge may have done the opposite. Got the warning about the system being locked whilst this happened, then it hu Junesng at 'checking the object map'.

Many years ago I used heat and cold to help troubleshoot digital circuitry hoping to change an intermittent problem into a permanent one. I routinely check that the FS has survived the upgrade process, so fired up disk utility and ran first aid on my newly converted APFS internal add (pci-e). As I sit here writing this 24 hours later, it is still successfully backing up my Mac. When I took it out and connected it to my Mac, voila, it was now recognized and actually completed a fairly large backup. I proceeded to order a replacement drive, and then on a lark, I put my passport in the fridge for an hour or so. I downloaded the WD drive utilities and the first test, Drive Status Check, passed, but the Quick Drive Test failed.

When I opened the Mac drive utilities, the wheel just continued to spin forever when I had the drive plugged into the USB port. After using My Passport drive for about 3 years for Time Machine backups, yesterday my Mac failed to mount it so Time Machine kept waiting for it to be available. Please help! I cannot lose the data on the hard drive! I can only assume that the problem that caused her Mac to restart also corrupted my hard drive somehow. While it was doing this, her Mac “Restarted because of problem” and since then the my hard drive that was connected has the problems above. It was preparing the backup for some time because it had been a while since it had been backed up. It is also used as the Time Machine for my girlfriend’s 2011 15-inch MacBook Pro and the problem started when I tried to do a Time Machine backup on her computer this morning.

Disk Utility also asks you to back up your data and replace the disk. When the SSD is about to fail, Disk Utility shows a message stating that you won’t repair the drive. Let Disk Utility repair your corrupt SSD. I have had the hard drive for a couple of years and it has always worked perfectly. Select the APFS or HFS+ disk or volume that you wish to repair from the sidebar of Disk Utility. Is there some way I can repair the hard drive and avoid losing all my data? Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required. The volume could not be verified completely. Also, when I start up Disk Utility, it takes a long time to appear on the list on the left hand side and when it does and I attempt to use First Aid, it fails and gives the following text:
#Disk utility first aid file system check exit code is 8 portable#
I also use it as a portable external hard drive to store other important files and my iTunes library.

I have a 2TB WD My Passport for Mac that I use as the Time Machine for my mid-2010 13-inch MacBook Pro.
